External hard drives are a handy, inexpensive way to back up, archive and transport large amounts of data; they’re indispensable for your small business. Storing data, however, is only half the picture – at times, you'll also need to import files from the external drive.

The File Explorer app, found on virtually all Windows PCs, offers fast, flexible ways to easily retrieve important data from your external hard drive.

Plug It In

Most external hard drives connect to your computer via the Universal Serial Bus (USB), a standard, familiar connector widely used for drives, printers and other computing equipment. Simply plug the drive’s USB connector into a USB socket (“port”) on the computer. After a moment, the PC will recognize the drive and an icon will automatically appear in Windows File Explorer.

The Power Play

Depending on the type of drive, power may come from a “wall-wart” type AC adapter plug. Or a portable external drive may get its power through the same USB connector that carries the data – in this case, it’s called USB 3.0, with no AC adapter needed. The earlier USB 1.0 and 2.0 ports don’t have enough power to run a hard drive. If the drive needs USB 3.0 for power, make sure your computer has USB 3.0 or 3.1 as well.

Check the Space

Especially for those times when you’re importing large amounts of data from an external drive, it helps to first check your PC’s internal drive to make sure it has enough free space to handle the incoming data. This is easy to do with File Explorer in Windows 10:

  • Click the Start Menu button.
  • Click the File Explorer shortcut icon.
  • Click the Local Disk C: icon under This PC. The File Explorer shows the available free space.

Importing Files: Drag and Drop

To import data from the hard drive, open the Windows Explorer app in your PC as described above. If the drive is successfully connected to the computer, you’ll see “External Drive” or similar in File Explorer’s list of devices.

In File Explorer, browse the folders until you locate the one you want the imported files to go in on your PC’s local drive. Then perform these steps:

  • Click the Start Menu button.
  • Click the File Explorer shortcut icon to open a second File Explorer window.
  • In the second File Explorer window, locate the icon for the external drive. Hint: It may be named for the hard drive vendor, such as Seagate, Western Digital or HP.
  • Click the external drive icon to open it.
  • Browse until you find the folder containing the files you want to import.
  • Import one file by clicking and dragging its icon to the first File Explorer window and the destination folder.
  • Import multiple files by shift-clicking each one, then dragging them to the first File Explorer window.
  • Import many files by clicking and dragging over the ones you want, then dragging them to the first File Explorer window.
  • Close the File Explorer windows when you’re done.

Windows File Permissions

To make your PC more secure, Windows files have built-in permissions that prevent reading, copying or deleting by non-authorized users. Windows compares your own user permissions with those in each file. When you import files from an external drive, an Access Denied error message might pop up. The easiest thing to do is simply try importing files, and if you get an error, sort it out with your tech support person.

Linux and Mac Drives

Importing files from a hard drive created on a Windows machine is a no-brainer; Windows PCs “understand” each other’s data. On the other hand, the same doesn’t apply to Linux and Mac drives. You can do it, but you’ll need a third-party utility app to translate the data from Linux or Mac to Windows. Example apps include Ext2Fsd, HFSExplorer and HFS+ for Windows.

  2. Go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers in the list

  4. Right click on a device, select Uninstall. Repeat the procedure for all devices in the list
  5. Once done, restart the computer
  6. Windows 10 will automatically install USB Controllers upon restart

If you are still experiencing the external hard drive issue, you need to disable USB selective setting in your computer.

Steps to disable USB selective setting

  1. Click the battery icon in the task-bar of your computer
  2. Beside your currently selected Power plan, look for the ‘Change Plan Settings’ link and click it
  3. Select the “Change advanced power settings” option
  4. Click the “+” beside USB Settings to expand options
  5. Click on “+” to expand USB selective suspend settings
  6. Click the link adjacent to Plugged in option
  7. From the drop-down menu select disabled option
  8. If you are using a laptop, click on Battery option
  9. Click the drop down menu and select Disabled
  10. Click Apply
  11. Click OK

To be on safe side, always make a point of creating a restore point, so that you can revert to your original settings if any of the above solutions do not work for you.

If none of the solutions work and you need to download Driver Updates, you can use a reliable driver update tool.
