The Playstation 3's controller, the Dualshock 3, isn't the easiest pad to get working on the PC. So why bother when it's so much easier to use an Xbox controller on PC, or you have a much newer Dualshock 4 sitting around? The Dualshock 3 has something the best PC controllers don't have: pressure-sensitive analog face buttons. That makes the Dualshock 3 the best choice for emulating PS2 games with PCSX2—Metal Gear Solid 3, for example, just doesn't play right without those analog buttons. And if you simply prefer the feel of Sony's older controllers over the redesigned Dualshock 4, this is the perfect controller for playing those classic Final Fantasy games on Steam.

What you need

DS3 Tool can connect PlayStation Sixaxis or DualShock 3 controllers to your. It is free; Play with your PS3 controller on PC. Sony has a long history of manufacturing quality gaming controllers, with the DualShock, DualShock 2, Sixaxis, and DualShock 3. Conversely, PC gaming controllers are often cheap and clumsy. However, just as it is possible to use an Xbox 360 controller with a PC, it is possible to connect a Sixasis or DualShock 3 PS3 controller to your computer. The Sixaxis was succeeded by the DualShock 3, an updated version of the controller that, like the DualShock and DualShock 2 controllers, incorporates haptic technology – also known as force feedback. A Sixaxis controller can also be used with Sony's PSP Go via Bluetooth after registering the controller on a PlayStation 3 console. Added support for PS3 Controllers as a separate controller type. On Windows you'll have to obtain the Sony driver through PlayStation Now.

Installation guide

1. Download the software linked above, and start by installing the four Microsoft packages. If you're on a Windows 7 PC, you'll also need to install the Xbox 360 controller driver. On Windows 8 and 10, it's already built in!

2. Important step: plug your Dualshock 3 into your PC with a mini-USB cable. Now we can start making it work.

Bluetooth installation note: if you also want to be able to use the controller wirelessly, make sure you have a Bluetooth dongle plugged in or your motherboard's Bluetooth enabled. ScpToolkit notes you need a Bluetooth 2.0 or higher dongle that supports Enhanced Data Rate (EDR).

3. Download ScpToolkit and run the installer. After accepting the terms and choosing your install location, you'll get a menu of all the options to install, as in the screenshot above. I recommend leaving this to the default. Click Install to begin the installation.

Bluetooth installation note: Make sure the ScpToolkit Bluetooth Pair Utility option is ticked.

4. After about 30 seconds, ScpToolkit will be installed, and you'll see this screen, with a big green button that says Run Driver Installer. Since this is a fresh install, that's what we want to do. Click the button.

5. This screen may look intimidating, but it's still pretty simple! Check the boxes for the drivers you want to install. In this case, we want to make sure Install Dualshock 3 driver is checked (it should be by default). Now click the arrow next to 'Choose Dualshock 3 controllers to install' to see a dropdown list of USB devices attached to your computer. Find the PlayStation 3 controller in the list and check it.

Bluetooth installation note: Make sure the 'Install Bluetooth driver' box is checked. Like you did with the Dualshock 3, click the arrow next to 'Choose Bluetooth dongles to install' and find your Bluetooth device in the list. Check it.

Note: If you're on Windows Vista, check the box for 'Force Driver Installation.' Otherwise, leave it unchecked. Click Install.

6. Watch the SCP Toolkit run through its installation process. You'll see lots of pop-ups on the side of your screen as it detects your hardware. Scroll to the bottom of the log and you should hopefully see 'Dualshock 3 USB Driver installed' (and 'Bluetooth Driver installed' if you chose to), signifying a successful installation. If all went well, click Exit.

7. Now that it's installed, you'll see ScpToolkit as an icon in your system tray. Look in your Start Menu for ScpToolkit Settings Manager. Here you can change some settings like disabling rumble, adjusting analog stick deadzones, and more. Most of these settings you should be able to leave alone.

ScpToolkit starts up with Windows by default, and also plays some sound effects that you might find obnoxious. To disable them, click the Sound settings tab and uncheck 'Enable notification sounds.'

PCSX2 emulator note: The PCSX2 settings tab allows you to patch the emulator's LilyPad controller plugin to support the pressure sensitive buttons. If you plan to use your PS3 controller with the emulator, click Browse to navigate to your PCSX2 installation folder, then click Enable to install the patch. Voila!

Using your Playstation 3 controller

Now that it's installed, the Dualshock 3 should behave like an Xbox 360 controller. Any game with native XInput support—pretty much any modern PC game that supports gamepads—should recognize it without a hitch. Unfortunately, this means that it won't register as a PlayStation controller to the few games that have native DualShock 4 support, so you won't get the correct Square/Cross/Triangle/Circle button icons by default. Some games let you manually choose your button icons, though. Look for that in game settings!

If you ran into issues installing ScpToolkit or using the controller, you can try posting in the official thread at the PCSX2 forums, but you may not get an answer.

How to connect your PS3 controller via Bluetooth

If you're not about that wired business, and followed all the Bluetooth installation steps above, you should be able to simply unplug the controller, and after a couple seconds it will sync via Bluetooth. You'll get a notification in the system tray when it does. Cool!

This works after a reboot, too. If you allow ScpToolkit to start with Windows, you should simply be able to plug in your PS3 controller again and it'll instantly be recognized. Once the LED is on, unplug the controller, and it'll once again be synced via Bluetooth.

If you have issues with Bluetooth, it could be that your dongle isn't supported. You may also find help in ScpToolkit's Github discussions. Bluetooth can be finicky, and any problem you run into could be due to hardware, or your particular version of Windows, or drivers… in other words, good luck.

How to use DualShock PS3 controller on PS4?

You need to use a controller converter device to achieve this feat. When PS4 was launched, many gaming and technology companies searched for ways in which old hardware (PS3 controller) can be used with new PS4.

Their efforts bore fruit in the form of controller converter or adapter. The controller adapter is a device that allows you to use your favorite controllers on any gaming console.

One of the advantages of using controller adapter is you can use any of your old controller and need not spend money on buying new controllers.

There are several controllers’ adapters available online. You can buy any controller that you like or that fits in your budget.

Method One – Use CronusMax Plus as Controller Converter

A CronusMax plus Controller Converter can allow you to use PS3 controller with PS4 console. You can purchase CronusMax Plus online and get started. After you have purchased the CronusMax Plus, you need to download Cronus Pro and install it on your computer.

After you have completed the installation, you will need to configure the Cronus Pro software so that it can work with the CronusMax Plus connector converter.

Here are the steps you need to follow.

Step One= Unpair DualShock4 from the PS4

Before you pair the PS3/DualShock3 controller with PS4, you need to unpair the DualShock4 that is earlier wirelessly paired with PS4. Here are the steps to follow.

• Connect the DualShock4 to CronusMax Plus with the mini-USB cable.
• Now connect the CronusMax Plus to the PS4 Console
• Power on the PS4 console
• On the PS4 console, select – Settings

• Select Devices-> Bluetooth devices

• Select the DualShock4 controller from the list

• Select Forget Device from the right-hand pane

• In the next screen, select OK

Now that you have unpaired the DualShock4 from the PS4 controller, you can go ahead with the process of pairing DualShock3 with PS4 console through CronusMax Plus.

Step Two – Prepare CronusMax Plus for PS4 console and DualShock3 controller connection

• Use the mini-cable provided to connect the CronuxMax Plus adapter to your PC. Some USB 3.0 ports (blue colored) do not work well with the connector adapter, so we recommend connecting the mini-cable to one of the USB 2.0 port.
• Now launch Cronus PRO software on your computer and click in following order – Tools -> Options
• In the Options window, go to Device tab
• In the Output Protocol, select PS4

• In the Configurations section, check mark following options
• Enable remote control of slot on each device
• Automatic DualShock3 Bluetooth pairing
• The device will remember the last active slot when restarted
• In the Speed Up Settings section, check mark following options- Inframe out and 1ms Response
• After you have made recommended settings above, click Close
• In the Options window, go to CMax Plus
• In the CMax Plus configuration section, put a check mark for the option Enable PS4 Partial Crossover support.
• Click Close to close the options window

Step Three – Pairing DualShock3 controller with CronusMax Plus

• Open Cronus Pro and click Tools
• In Tools menu, select DS3/SixAxis pairing

• Now take the Bluetooth USB adapter that is provided with CronusMax Plus and insert the Bluetooth USB adapter into input port of CronusMax Plus
• You will now see a DS3/SixAxis Bluetooth pairing wizard appear on your computer screen
• In Step 1, click Next to continue

• When the Step 2 of DS3/SixAxis Bluetooth pairing wizard appears on the screen, do the following

• Remove the Bluetooth USB adapter from the CronusMax Plus input port and connect your DualShock3 controller to CronusMax Plus using a mini-USB cable
• Click Next
• The pairing is now complete and the CronusMax Plus has paired the Bluetooth USB adapter with your DualShock3 controller. Click Finish to close window.

• Now you need to disconnect the DualShock3 controller from the CronusMax Plus adapter by unplugging the mini-USB cable that connects them
• You can also remove CronusMax Plus from your computer

Step Four – Connecting DualShock3 controller to PS4

• Connect the CronusMax Plus into one of the USB ports on your PS4 console.
• After the CronusMax Plus is connected to PS4 console, you should see spinning standby animation in the LED panel of CronusMax Plus
• Now connect the Bluetooth USB adapter to the input port of CronusMax Plus connector
• Switch on the DualShock3 controller by pressing PS button
• After few seconds the LED panel of the CronusMax Plus should go from spinning standby animation to a number (0 or any other number which depends on the slot it is connected to). This indicates the DualShock3 is connected to PS4 console and you can enjoy games.

Note- since we have used the PS4 Partial crossover support, the PS4 console will check the controller after every 10 minutes. You will receive a disconnecting and reconnecting messages during the game but don’t worry these messages won’t interrupt your gaming and the games will run smoothly.

Solution Two- Use Brook connector converter

Brook is another connector converter that would help you connect DualShock3 connector to PS4. In comparison to CronusMax Plus, it is a relatively simple device that needs fewer configuration steps to work.

Here are the steps to follow.

• Insert the Brook connector converter into one of the USB ports of PS4 console.
• Now using a mini- USB cable connect the DualShock3 connector and Brook Connector
• You would see the LED1 on the DualShock3 blinking that indicates the connection is complete
• you can remove the mini USB cable connecting the DualShock3 connector and Brook connector
• Now try playing games using DualShock3 connector
