Satyameva Jayate (transl. Truth alone triumphs; Hindi pronunciation: [sət̪jəmeːʋə dʒəjət̪eː]) is a 2018 Indian vigilanteaction film directed by Milap Milan Zaveri. The film features John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee in lead roles. It is the second collaboration between Abraham and Bajpayee who previously appeared together on screen in Shootout at Wadala. It was released on 15 August 2018 along with Akshay Kumar's film Gold.^[4][5]

The shooting for the film began on 5 March 2018 and it premiered on 5 April 2018.^[6] The official trailer for the film was released on 28 June 2018.^[7] The film was released on the 2018 Indian Independence Day.^[8]

Plot[edit]

The movie starts with the gruesome killing of a police officer by a hooded man, who burns him alive and leaves his ashes on the stairs of the police station in a pot. He challenges all corrupt policemen that he will kill all of them brutally if they don't stop taking bribes. The killer is shown to be Virendra Rathod (John Abraham).Later at an accident scene when a beggar's wife is killed the police takes a bribe from the culprit to save him. Later on reaching home the same policeman is killed and burnt by him.

While cleaning on the beach, a man was bragging about how he took responsibility of cleaning the country so that the flag could be hoisted high, but a girl, named Shikha (Aisha Sharma) makes fun of the man as the he did not hoist the flag properly, upon which the minister replies that it is only a small mistake. Shikha said that from the people who stand in movie theatres and sing the National Anthem with respect, to the soldiers who sacrifice their lives to keep the flag hoisted, none of them think it is a small mistake. Vir, impressed, moved onto the next area and cut his finger, upon which Shikha saw him and introduced herself.

The senior inspector after both these murders sends for Shivansh (Manoj Bajpayee) as he is one of the most efficient officers and was on leave. Shivansh comes and starts the operation of finding the killer. Getting a call from Vir himself (who is disguised with a deep voice), he is threatened that he'll kill the next corrupted officer in Thane itself, which Shivansh misinterprets as 'Police Thana' (police station)'. A corrupt officer is then killed by Vir after puncturing his bike's petrol tank and then setting him on fire at the petrol pump. Shivansh is shocked and while brainstorming realizes that the killer is carrying out killings according to the acronym 'Satyameva Jayate'.^{[clarification needed]}

The police now expect a fourth killing at a place from letter Y. Where a police officer is brutally beating a suspect, Vir enters in a police uniform and ties a blindfold on the suspect's eyes and burns the inspector and flees while Shivansh who was on stake out misses him at the station. Later Vir and Shikha meet at a happy animals centre where she works and get together. One night when Shivansh returns home is doubtful seeing an open window. He enters suspiciously and he finds someone there and aims a gun at his forehead, but then they both laugh it off as Vir is revealed to be Shivansh's younger brother. Flashback to the past where on independence day the two brothers are taught by their father about the oath taken by police officers and both of them aim to be police officers upon growing up. But their father, Inspector Shiv Rathod (Chetan Pandit) is then suspected to be involved in drug trading and is arrested and detained. He commits suicide by burning himself in front of the flag on the very same day. Back to the present the brothers unite and the next day Shivansh says he'll drop Vir to work but they stop by a hospital. As Vir goes up to hand over his brother his phone, he notices that the police officer at the jail is still alive. While returning down he counts the number of rooms and sees a toilet in between and excuses himself. He jumps through the window and breaks in the police officer's room and burns him and the siren goes off. Returning to the toilet he bangs himself against the mirror and misguides his brother saying the killer pushed against him and escaped. Later on Shivansh asks all corrupt policemen to gather at one place and put on security so that they would be safe. Vir takes out Shikha for a date so that she could give evidence that Vir was with her that day. Later on Shivansh gets a call from Vir saying he will continue it and Shivansh will clap for him when he comes in front of him. Shivansh claps for Vir as it the event of his art exhibition and where he speaks about his father thus hurting his brother who believed that his father was corrupt. Later on Vir and Shikha be together and he warns her of staying away from her but she says she knows the pain of losing family members as she lost her mother and didn't contact her father since 15 years. Next turn is of a corrupt officer who exhorts money from the vendors and complains of less money seeing the vendor's daughter and asking him to enter her into business upon which she insults him. These corrupt policemen are given special protection but during Ashura he notices the same girl and goes behind her where Vir arrives and beats him up and burns him there and while fleeing is caught by Shivansh. He is recognised by Shivansh who says he saw his paintings after he had come to ask forgiveness to him later on. Seeing the drawings of Vir full of enstranged men he realises these were the same police officer killed and realises the killer was none other than his brother, Vir. Vir flees at that time and Shivansh goes and informs senior inspector when he gets the call of Vir saying Shikha is in his custody who surprisingly turns out to be the senior inspectors daughter and he calls them both to the same place where his father committed suicide.

Vir asks the senior inspector to pour kerosene on himself and asks him whether his father was really a corrupt officer upon which he replies that he wasn't. The senior officer said that Inspector Shiv Rathod was too honest and he filed a search warrant on purpose. Then Vir goes and repeats this to Shivansh. While there appears many police vans to kill Vir and Shivansh. Vir kills all of them and goes to kill the Senior Inspector but is shot by his own brother in between, but he strikes a match against the badge his father had which said ‘SATYAMEVA JAYATE’ and lights the inspector. The inspector dies and Vir is floored on Shivansh’s arms. He and Shivansh recite the oath their father taught them, but midway through, Vir dies.

The film was released on 15 August 2018 to coincide with Indian Independence Day. The film was released along with Akshay Kumar'sGold. It was released on 2500 screens in India.^[11]

Soundtrack[edit]

The music for the film is composed by Sajid-Wajid, Tanishk Bagchi, Rochak Kohli and Arko Pravo Mukherjee while lyrics are penned by Shabbir Ahmed, Kumaar, Arko Pravo Mukherjee, Danish Sabri and Ikka. The background score is composed by Sanjoy Chowdhury.

The first song of the film, 'Dilbar' from the 1999 film Sirf Tum originally sung by Alka Yagnik and composed by Nadeem-Shravan has been recreated for this film by Tanishk Bagchi in the voices of Neha Kakkar, Dhvani Bhanushali and Ikka. It was released on 4 July 2018.^[13] Reinvisioned with Middle-Eastern musical influences, and with its music video featuring Nora Fatehi performing belly dancing, the song became popular across Southern Asia and the Arab world, with all versions of the song (including an Arabic-language version) having received more than 1billion views on YouTube.^[14]

The second song of the film titled as 'Paniyon Sa' which is sung by Atif Aslam and Tulsi Kumar was released on 12 July 2018. The third song of the film to be released was 'Tajdar-E-Haram', a Qawwali which is sung by Wajid Khan, on 26 July 2018. The fourth and the last song, 'Tere Jaisa' sung by Arko Pravo Mukherjee and Tulsi Kumar was released on 1 August 2018. The soundtrack was by released T-Series on 1 August 2018.

Box office[edit]

Satyameva Jayate collected ₹20.52 crore in India on Day 1 which is the highest opening for a John Abraham film and the 5th highest opener film of 2018 after Sanju, Race 3, Gold and Baaghi 2^{[citation needed]}. On day 2 it saw a big dip and collected ₹7.92 crore which makes a total of ₹28.44 crore at Box Office. The film collected ₹9.18 crore on day 3. The film collected ₹9.03 crore on its fourth day and ₹10.26 crore on day 5 which makes its collections to ₹56.91 crore. The film collected ₹103.21 crore in India.^[15]
